In the Spotlight (Ep. 5): Seth Rollins
In the Spotlight (Ep. 5): Seth Rollins
It's the last Saturday of the month, and so that means another "In the Spotlight" post. Today's featured superstar is The Man himself, Seth Rollins. I honestly can't think of any pro wrestler that has had a better 2018 than Seth Rollins.
It all began with him and Jason Jordan losing the Raw Tag Team Championships to Sheamus and Cesaro back in February. After being placed in the Elimination Chamber match, two weeks later, Rollins was placed in a gauntlet match featuring the other participants. That gauntlet match was the starting point of this hot streak for him.
Now, I spent time this morning rewatching that gauntlet match. Rollins made Raw history by spending a total of one hour and five minutes in that match. He defeated Roman Reigns and John Cena, the top guys in the company, in the first two segments on that match.
About 30 minutes in, Rollins defeats Reigns with a quick roll-up pin. There were two key moments in his segment with Cena that I want to point out. Around the 52-minute mark, Seth Rollins hits a Superplex/Falcon Arrow combo on Cena. Then, around minute 55, he catches Cena, who is coming from the top rope, and rolls through to hit him with the AA. To be able to successfully hit those moves on Cena at those points in the match is incredible. I'm not sure of anyone that would have the strength and conditioning to do that.
Rollins' big performances would not stop there. He would go on to have solid matches with Miz and Finn Bálor. This would lead to their triple threat match at Wrestlemania 34, where Seth would win the Intercontinental Championship. That accomplishment added his name to the Triple Crown Champion and Grand Slam Champion lists.
Then, at the Greatest Royal Rumble, he retained the title by defeating Miz, Finn Bálor, and Samoa Joe in a great ladder match. Three days later, he retained the title again against Bálor. And at Backlash, six days later, he retained against Miz. The next night on Raw, he would begin doing open challenges for the title.
Before, many fans have said that they missed Rollins being a heel because that was when he was at his best. I'd have to say this run over the past few months is the best that he's ever been. Rollins has become one of the most over guys in the company. He's been that light in the darkness for fans that don't like how Brock is being booked as a champion. He calls himself a fighting champion and he backs it up every week. A few weeks ago, I believe he said, "When you fight like a champion, you win like a champion." He has successfully defended the title in several different countries recently, so it is hard to argue with him on that.
Rollins has got all the momentum in the world right now and it's hard not to like what he's been doing. I believe that he is the best in the world right now. Nobody else is putting on the string of performances in the ring like he is. I'm hoping this momentum puts him back in the world title picture in the near future. His hard work in and out of the ring is amazing and it's paying off.
2018 has been a great year for him so far. I can't wait to see how he continues to run Monday nights, because Raw truly has become Monday Night Rollins.
Let me know what you think of Seth Rollins' run this year in the comment section below!
